Collins Hi-SpeedÂŽDollies

IMG_4230a

For more than 40 years, the unique dolly innovations of Collins Manufacturing Corp. are quite numerous. Besides being the first to invent an articulating dolly that actually lifted a car off the ground, without the aid of jacks, in 1972, thereby changing the towing industry worldwide, Collins was also first to introduce:

* 1977: Safety Ratchets: protects towers from injury while lifting vehicles with dollies
* 1986: Safety Locks: helps prevent dollies from dropping while towing
* 1995: Aluminum Axles: now the industry standard, at only 22 lbs. per axle
* 2000: Greaseable Hubs: more convenient serviceability
* 2006: Aluminum Greaseable Hubs: up to three times lighter than steel hubs
* 2006: Replaceable Components: the only dolly that can be repaired on the spot
* 2006: Lightest-Weight Dolly: as light as 48 lbs. per side
* 2007: Aluminum 8″ Wheels: first ever in the world! Five-hole, polished, mags, Cool
* 2009: Two-Toned Zinc Plating: with polished aluminum mag wheels = Eye Candy
* 2010: Square Aluminum Pry Bar: tower input gives back to the industry @ 5.9 lbs.
* 2011: Tow Cradles: From Tow Solutions, transports vehicles without wheels and tires
* 2012: Aluminum Carrier Dolly System: addresses issues of loading cars on carriers

Collins offers the heaviest-duty dollies, rated at 4,280 lb static-load capacity. Between their tried and proven Hi-SpeedÂŽDollies for the highway and their new patent-pending Carrier Dolly System, all dolly-towing bases are now covered.

Collins’ latest innovation, the aluminum Carrier Dolly System, is quite simple where it solves all the problems of Carrier loading; all-wheel drive vehicles, hybrid vehicles, and electric vehicles, whose wheels are locked by the transmissions and won’t roll, are now easily moved with the carrier dolly system. The dolly lifts the vehicle and the aluminum tow bar hooks to the dollies. The winch cable is then hooked to the tow bar, not the vehicle, and pulls the dollies up the flatbed. The vehicle simply rides the carrier dollies. This is especially handy when there is no place to hook onto various vehicles — in fact, nothing ever touches the vehicle.

With the tow bar inverted and fitted to either of the carrier dollies, it now becomes a motorcycle dolly for winching up the carrier, as well.

For vehicles without wheels, the Tow Cradle works perfect with the carrier dollies. Rolling the vehicle up the bed is a far superior system vs. dragging it up and then back down the bed, damaging both bed and vehicle.

Since experience, good and bad, is the premium schoolmaster, hindsight truly becomes the best vision forward. With four decades of hindsight and several patents awarded, Collins is the undisputed leader in dynamic dolly design.

The latest thing in lighting is LED – light emitting diodes. They are used in so many applications for home, office and especially on vehicles – cars, pickups and big rigs. These lights do not use bulbs that can burn out and need replacing, and use much less amperage. The long life – in many cases, years – of these light emitting diodes more than makes up for their higher price, since they don’t need to be replaced nearly as often as incandescent bulbs. In addition, LED lights come in a wide variety of colors; some of them even change color while lit, creating some very interesting effects. Over time, the money-saving features become apparent in lower fuel and energy bills. On vehicles, especially trucks and big rigs, the more lights the better for high visibility and safety. In addition, many truckers have used them to make a statement – lots of lights and colors to match the paint and striping jobs on their rigs. LEDs are available in a wide variety of sizes, styles and shapes to satisfy most requirements. A full range of these products are available at Virgo Fleet Supplies in Brooklyn, NY.

Two Industries Are Better Than One….The Convergence of Towing and Storage

The towing industry and the storage industry have long been considered quite different from one another. However, a new company called Snappy Box Moving and Storage is making it easy for towing operators to use the resources they already have (such as standard rollback trucks and a storage yard)to easily add portable storage. Snappy Box uses their 10 years of industry experience to offer a turnkey management program that runs all aspects of the portable storage business and allows the operator to continue to focus on their towing business.
Snappy Box Container and Logo2
With the increasing financial pressures that are facing towing operators, adding portable storage provides a way to diversify and produce consistent revenue when times are slow. The towing operator benefits by generating additional revenue from both “rent” of the portable storage container and the “delivery and pick-up fees.” On average, the containers rent for about $200 per month and stay rented for 6 months. That works out to be around $1400 per customer when you factor in both rent and delivery fees. That same container when rented for a year could produce $2800! Multiply this by 50, 100, or 200 containers, and towing operators can generate a significant profit.

Portable Storage was created to provide a more convenient option for customers needing self-storage. The portable storage container is brought to the customer’s home or business where they pack it up. Once it is packed, it can be stored at the customer’s property or brought back to a portable storage company’s secure outdoor storage lot or warehouse.

Snappy Box sells containers uniquely designed to be moved loaded with standard rollback trucks. The containers are waterproof, stackable, collapsible, secure, quickly assembled, lightweight and aesthetically pleasing. They come in two sizes: 8’ x 16’ and 8’ x 19’. These containers are extremely durable, typically have a 30-year life cycle, can carry up to 10,000 pounds and can withstand winds up to 120 miles an hour.

If you are looking for a way to diversify your towing business, create additional revenue for your business and utilize your trucks and drivers through slow times, then SnappyBoxÂŽ Moving and Storage may be a great solution for you. To find out more about their services, check them out at snappybox.com/towing or call 803-553-0002.

Yale Cordage

Purchasing Tips for Synthetic Tow Truck Winch Lines

On tow trucks all over, high-performance synthetic winch lines are rapidly replacing their wire counterparts. It’s a change driven by efficiency and safety. Synthetics are lighter, easier to handle, and just as strong or stronger than the same diameter steel wire rope; yet if they do fray or part, they typically do not pose the same threat wire does of injury from razor-sharp kinks or violent snap-backs. If last year’s harsh polar vortex gave your wire winch line a beating, or worse, made it a safety hazard, you may want to check out your synthetic options.

When you do, be sure to visit Yalecordage.com to find a local certified distributor. They’ll help you determine the right synthetic fiber for your workload, budget, and climate. Environmental conditions and the primary weight, volume, and frequency of use largely determine the ideal fiber. Choose the best construction for your working environment. Rain, freezing temperatures, sand, wind, heat, and sun exposure all play in to the type of braid you need.

Align the strength of your rope with the capacity of your rig, typically five or more times the rated capacity of your rig.

Analyze your work practices to determine energy absorption needs, ascertained by studying a stress-strain curve of load vs. elongation. Understand the splicing requirements of your lines. Many of the newer synthetics have proprietary splicing techniques. Keep up-to-date on usage techniques to keep you safe out on the road. Most distributors offer ongoing training and technical support. Take them upon it.
